Recreation
Madison County has a full-time recreation department that operates three area parks that have a wide variety of facilities to accommodate people of all ages. The department also offers a wide range of programs and activities for the community. Sammy A. Haggard Park being the largest park is located at 1345 Highway 98 West and is the hub of most major activities sponsored by the department. Amenities here include five lighted softball/baseball fields, one lighted football field surrounded by a quarter mile jogging/walking track, five lighted batting cages, four lighted tennis courts, three pavilions, and two playgrounds. Mize Park is a ten acre facility located off of Highway 29 South on Colbert Grove Church Road. Our Diamond Hill Park is farther south on Highway 29 and is the center of softball action for the county.
Additional ball fields are in the Sanford and Diamond Hill Communities as well as in Comer and Colbert. The latter towns also have picnic areas and pavilions, and Arnold Park in Comer has an asphalt area for tennis and basketball and a children’s playground.
Watson Mill Bridge State Park is a 1,020 acre park located on the South Fork of the Broad River in Madison and Oglethorpe counties south of Comer and Carlton. The park offers 21 campsites with electric and water hookups in the regular camping area and 11 sites with water and electrical hookups at the equestrian area, three areas for pioneer campers, nature trails, picnic areas with pavilions, fishing, volleyball court, horse trails, canoeing, paddle boats, and other passive recreation facilities. Other features in the park is the historic covered bridge and an enclosed group shelter.
Also within easy driving distance from Madison County are Victoria Bryant and Tugaloo State Parks in Franklin County and Hart State Park on the 55,000-acre Hartwell Reservoir, and Bobby Brown and Elijah Clark Memorial State Parks on the 70,000-acre Clark Hill Reservoir.
Sunrise Golf Course, one of the most popular public golf courses in Northeast Georgia, lies just north of Colbert, and is the site of many tournaments. The club also offers instruction by professional golfers, personal assistance fitting clubs and selecting equipment.
Eagle Green’s Sandy Creek Golf Course, on Georgia Highway 98 is just across the line in Jackson County.
Throughout Madison County large wooded areas filled with game and wild birds offer excellent hunting possibilities. Rivers and ponds provide good sport for fishermen. The Broad River, in eastern Madison County is a favorite canoeing area with excellent category two rapids.
