Geography

Madison County covers 285 square miles of the Piedmont Plateau of Northeast Georgia. Using Danielsville as a reference point, Madison County is seventeen miles northeast of Athens, eighty miles northeast of Atlanta, and eighty-seven miles southwest of Greenville, South Carolina. U.S. Highway 29 (Georgia Highway 8) and Georgia Highways 72, 98, 106, 172, 174, 191 and 281 serve the county.

Carlton, Comer, Colbert and Hull are situated along the CSX Rail Line and Highway 72. Ila is situated at the intersection of Highway 98 and 106.

The climate is generally mild. The average annual temperature is 63 degrees and the frost-free season averages 215 days annually, extending from April to November. 1998 average temperatures for selected months follow.

Precipitation averages 55.01 inches annually. March is normally the wettest month, with an average of more than five and one-half inches, while October, with an average of two and one-half inches, is usually the driest.
