Transportation
Madison County is served by one federal and seven state maintained highways. CSX railroad crosses the southern area of the county. Bus and air shuttle transportation is available in nearby Athens. Major airports are easily accessible in Atlanta and Greenville, S.C. The Georgia Department of Transportation is currently working to four-lane Georgia Highway 72 that parallels the CSX track. Completion of the project will give the county a major highway-link with nearby interstate routes. Numerous truck terminals are in the area.
HIGHWAYS
The most heavily traveled highway in Madison County is Georgia 72, which runs from Athens-Clarke County through Hull, Colbert, Comer, and Carlton and east to Elberton. This route parallels the CSX Transportation Line and traverses the most densely populated section of Madison County. From Hull on Georgia 72, it is five miles to the city of Athens. In the eastern part of the county on Georgia 72, it is eleven miles from Carlton to Elberton.
RAILROADS
The CSX Transportation System connects the cities of Hull, Colbert, Comer and Carlton with Athens. Normal shipping time for carload quantities to Chicago, Detroit and New York from Madison County in four days. The nearest "piggyback" service is located in Atlanta.
AIRLINES
The nearest commercial air service is available at the Athens Municipal Airport (US Air commutes to Charlotte, North Carolina and Sky Bus Express and AirTran commute to Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta). Ground transportation from Athens to Hartsfield is available through AAA Airport Shuttle, Inc. and AAS Shuttle.
BUS SERVICE
Bus service is available in Athens from Southeastern Stages, Inc. The principal routes of parcel shipment are via Athens, Atlanta, Augusta and Macon.
